The Completion of SD Film Studio

Mayor and Commissioner Personally Visited Live Filming and Testing Scene

After 6 years of preparation from 2003, the first digital art center in Asia— “Taipei Digital Art Center (DAC)” was officially opened to the public on June 28. The DAC features art exhibitions on a regular basis, along with the “Creative Club Lab (C.C.Lab)” as another key mechanism. It is a venue for artists and hi-tech industry to launch experimental collaborations, as well as establish a practical R&D sharing operation model. The H.D. image development serves as one of the annual programs of the “Creative Club Lab”, while the “SD Film Studio” is specifically set for the purpose of digital art education and promotion. Academics and experts will be invited to host digital art related symposiums of the DAC. Audiences are welcome to take part in the events, and for those who cannot show up, highlights of the events will also be available online. In the coming future, the “SD Film Studio” will be used as a symposium venue, and play the role as a virtual lecture room to spread ideas with the help of online communities.

“SD” is a standard format used in image making and film. It is very similar to the image format of the general broadcasting companies. SD is characterized by its simple structure, which is suitable for real-time recording and online streaming for file browsing. To meet the standard image format requirement for film studio and online communities, the SD format is especially selected by DAC as the key feature to enhance the efficiency of promotion and education. In line with the related online discussions, various creative forums with various topics are arranged for “online communities” during the time of the special opening exhibitions. The highlights of these forums are also available for viewing online.

In addition, the 4th Digital Art Festival, Taipei this year also comprises online communities. In response to the theme “image development“ for this year, apart from SD standard format for show recording, the film studio may be used as a general and informal venue for photography.

On June 28, the opening day of the DAC, Lung-bing Hau, Mayor of Taipei; Yong-ping Lee, Commissioner of Department of Cultural Affairs, Taipei City Government; Hsien-hao Liao, the former Commissioner of Department of Cultural Affairs; Yi-hua Lin, Taipei City Councilor and other distinguished guests personally attended the event and witnessed the official opening of film studio. To test the facilities of the film studio, all guests were filmed for the first video clip.

The “SD Film Studio” signifies the first achievement of C.C. Lab’s special annual programs. In order to enhance the effectiveness of the “SD Film Studio”, DAC decided to rent out space for private use, especially for related work groups or artists for art creations that enable “Digital Art” to continuously thrive and show its strong presence. The DAC has always been committed to promoting digital art in Taiwan. Since the “SD Film Studio” only marks a beginning, C.C.Lab will strive to live up to and fulfill the objective of integrating digital technology with art and culture.

The 360-degree panoramic round shot has becomes one of art community’s hottest topics in recent years. After a few glimpses of the actual product have been offered at numerous commercial expos, the public no longer considers it far-fetched technology. However, the technology is still far from affordable: Without depending on subsidies, the technology is effectively unavailable. Instead of putting it into practical use, the creative professionals end up admiring the technology from a distance.

To overcome such difficulty, Etat Lab (Etat Art & Culture Corporation) formed a R&D team with artist Chia-hsiang Lee to develop state-of-art technology, ¼ less than the current market price. The product will be the next solution for replay and the 360-degree round shot of the near future.

At the end of 2008, the team has set up an actual scene of the experimental back stage at the DAC. It comprises an surround audio-visual system of 8 projectors to provide the most critical but essential features: “
Exposure Control” and “Image Stitching” for panoramic projection.
